The whole time we were working on Lucy, we had a date in mind. Early on, we had found out about a Scotty Rally in western PA and we decided that it would be our first big camping trip. My original plan was to have her complete by May 1st but that date came and went before she had her aluminum skins on. Since we had a deadline, there was a flurry of activity at the end to get Lucy ready for camping. We finished her on July 4th and headed out on July 6th.</div>

Our destination was Harecreek Campground in Corry, PA. It ended up taking 7 hours to get there but we had fun along the way. Harecreek is a nice little campground. About half of the sites are full time campers. Sheriff Shirley checked us in and took us on a tour of available sites on her golf cart. We ended up with site 42. It is a deep site with one little shade tree. All the sites at Harecreek are full hookup. It took us about an hour to unhook and set up. Once we were done, we took a dip in the really nice pool.</div>

Like I said, this was a Scotty Rally. We spent 4 nights with some really great people. There was a campfire every night at Dave and Beth's. We were initiated into the group with Oreo's. On the first night there were at least 10 types of Oreo's passed around. The kids loved this. </div>

We went to Erie, PA on our first full day of camping. We ended up at Dobbins Landing. This is a pier that stretches into the bay. The views are wonderful. Many boat tours depart from here. We had lunch bay side at the Bayfront Grill. After, we drove out to Presque Isle to play on the beach and swim in the lake. It was really nice with lots of nice sand and clean bath houses. </div>

Our Scotty group had an Elegant Wine and Cheese dinner one evening. Everyone dressed up to some extent and we had some excellent food and company. Thanks to our organizer Gail, I had a tie. The next day we drove to Jamestown, NY and went to the Lucile Ball Museum. We had a lot of fun learning about Lucy and Desi. We even had lunch at Babilu's. We ended our stay at Harecreek with a camper open house and Yankee Swap with the group. The Serro Scotty Camping Enthusiasts are a great group of people and we look forward to camping with them again soon.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
We had a few mishaps. It rained all four nights in Corry and we sprung a leak on the second morning. I am not sure where the leak originated from exactly but I apparently fixed it because we never saw another drop of water inside. The rain also wrecked our canopy the third morning. Too much rain collected on the canopy and it collapsed the frame overnight. Oh well, we will be searching for a different canopy design that won't hold water for next time. </div>

Over the next 2 days, ate well, enjoyed the view and went to the Falls. It was the first time the kids has seen the Niagara Falls. Jill and I were there once before 17 years earlier. We went to the Power Plant on the American side. It has a really nice visitors center that is free. Mississippi Mud, in Tonawanda, is a great place for lunch. They have a variety of sandwiches and an ice cream shop. Plus the view of the river from the roof is pretty good. The Maid of the Mist was a lot of fun. It was less wet, but much louder than I expected. Fort Niagara State Park has a great pool with slides for a minimal cost and is a very nice place to relax in the late afternoon. The Falls at night are very pretty and the parking is free after 8 or so. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
We had a great time in the Niagara Falls region. We wish that we could have stayed another day or two to explore the area, but we had to get back home. On our way out of town, we stopped at one of the more than 25 winery's in the region. We picked Niagara Landing Wine Cellars because it was the only one with Niagara in the name. Jill and I did a quick but thorough wine tasting for 10:30 in the morning and departed with 4 nice bottles of wine. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To break up the drive home, Jill's college roommate, Diane let us camp in her driveway for a night. Of course this was the hottest day of our trip, but with 2 fans we all still slept comfortably. You may not know this but the movie Shawshank Redemption was shot at a prison in Mansfield, OH. It is was on our way home so we stopped to have lunch and get a few pictures. We did not do the tour but I am told it is worth every penny.</div>

(almost)Lucy is ready for camping. It has been a lot of work over the past 10 months. I still need to make the counter tops because i ordered the laminate too late to be delivered before our first trip. However, we are really happy with how she turned out. A week ago, we pulled her out of the garage so we could finish up some outside items, like installing the door.<br />

We ended up having someone else make the cushion covers and they really did a nice job. Jill made all of the curtains and did all of the decorating. She made this little trailer feel a lot bigger on the inside. The last thing I did was to build the sling cot that my daughter will sleep in.<br />

To give Lucy a proper send off we decided to christen her. We had our good friends come over for a snack and the breaking of the champagne. Unfortunately, the bottle would not break. I tried it twice!. Just took a little paint off of the coupler. Pro-Tip: Use a thin walled bottle if you try this. :) <br />

We had a wonderful time bringing this little camper back to her former glory. We can't wait to start camping in her and sharing Lucy's adventures.<br />

Cheers!Jill & Bryanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03916920635377835164noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4455985135555998609.post-48685285397135352992016-06-30T09:12:00.000-04:002016-07-23T09:26:14.727-04:00Been a long time/All together now!Time has a way of getting away from you. I didn't realize that I had not put a blog post together for almost 5 months. A lot has happened during that time and this will be a long post.<br />
<br />
After getting Lucy boxed in, I spent some time finishing all the roof supports and insulating her roof. I used 1" silver faced polystyrene foam insulation. This ended up causing a little problem later since I only had 3/4" recesses to put it in. To keep water off of her roof, I created a domed roof. I don't have any pictures of this, but what I did was take 3/4" plywood strips and created a 1-1/2" tall arc that went from side to side on the roof supports. The center of the dome is at the roof vent. I ended up adding these extra dome strips to 4 of my roof supports. I tried to make the outer two a little shorter to let the aluminum flatten out evenly.<br />
<br />
I stained and poly'd the ceiling, but first I had to sand it. I used a flexible plywood for easy installation, but this material had a horrible surface finish. I sanded it for at least 8 hours and there are still some machine marks. Staining over your head is difficult and tiring, thankfully she is only 10' long. It took 2 coats of stain and 2 of poly before I was happy with it. Pro Tip: make sure to sand between coats of poly. I didn't because I was tired of sanding and I have a slightly rough finish when it could have been smooth.<br />
<br />
Next up was paint. Since I was building Lucy in my garage, I didn't have a lot of extra room. Luckily I have a small workroom in my basement. I bought a lot of plastic sheeting and created a paint booth. I hung a box fan at the one window in the room and used a respirator as I painted.<br />

<br />
I started out trying to strip the paint off of the aluminum but I found that it really didn't want to come off. Instead of stripping, I ended up using a wire brush to scrape the paint off. It worked well on most of the panels. Where holes appeared, I used JB Weld to fill the small holes. I painted for weeks. Bringing one panel into my basement paint shop at a time. Each panel was cleaned, primed and painted. It took about 3 days per panel. I used spray paint for all of the aluminum and it came out pretty nice. One thing I didn't account for was how little a can of paint actually covered. I went through probably 30+ cans of primer and paint in the end.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
As I completed panels, I installed them on Lucy. Here is her road side. This side has all of my services. I added a new 30 amp input, cable input and water inlet. The old water inlet was too low for my new 15 gallon tank. The old inlet is still there to cover a hole in the skin.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Work continued on the interior. I built the back gaucho bed and also the dinette seats. Since the camper is small, I tried to create as much storage as possible. Under the gaucho bed, I have 2 large drawers. The dinette had a big drawer and also under seat storage. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
For my kitchen drawers I wanted to do something special. I have a CNC milling machine so I cut out some Scotty shapes for a nice detail on the drawers.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
As I got closer to completion, we finished little jobs like wiring up the outlets, painting the furniture and touching up some damage I did to the paint. I also completed a really big job. Lucy's original roof was a 3 piece one that caused many of her water problems. I decided to put on a one piece roof. This was a big job, but not too difficult. I bought the metal from an RV outlet online. The shipping was almost as much as the metal. I bent the channel on each end of the roof myself using some wood strips and a hammer. The hardest part was cutting the metal to size. <br />
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
Painting the roof was interesting. I masked off the entire camper and hung plastic. Painting took 2 weekends and was difficult because I have poor lighting in my garage. It did come out nice in the end.<br />

<br />
After paint, I installed the windows and the edge trim. I used butyl tape on everything and the installation went smooth. I did miss a bit on one aluminum panel install. When I put the front side window in, it did not cover all of the holes. I ended up adding a few eyebrows to fix that issue. I painted and repaired the rock guard on the front window. The last project was repairing the door. I was able to repair the original Bargman lock. The door was a mess when I took it apart. Thankfully there was enough left that I could get some good measurements from it. <br />

Made some real good progress the last few weeks. I installed the last pieces of the ceiling and front. Most of the ceiling supports are in and I have cut out the fan hole. I have also started insulating the top, but it is not done yet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The upper kitchen cabinet has been painted and installed. I also have gotten some of the electrical hooked up. I am putting in a few 110V and 12V outlets. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the ceiling lights we found and they look really nice when they are turned on. We decided on these lights after going to our local RV show last week. They are nice and flat and they put off just the right amount of light. Plus the under cabinet lights work and look nice too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At this point, I am trying to get the last of the ceiling supports and insulation in. I have started running the power for all the exterior running lights. In the next few weeks, I will be prepping the ceiling for stain and building out the dinette seating. If all goes well, I will be prepping and painting the skins in March.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
I am still behind schedule on my updates. Over the last few weeks, the floor has gone in. This was an adventure. I didn't buy much extra so I had to be careful with my cuts. Luckily the only place I shorted the vinyl is hidden by the back gaucho bed. The trim cleaned up nicely with a little soap, water and steel wool. I did not go for bright aluminum, just clean. You may also notice the walls are painted. I know may will feel this ruins the camper, but we wanted to it feel open and light. The ceiling will be stained, so we are mixing the old with the new. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cabinets are painted to match the walls. The drawer fronts will be an accent color but I am not sure what it is yet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Getting plywood that will bend easily has been a challenge for me. I special ordered some at Home Depot. The stuff bends very easily, but the surface quality is ok at best. I am going to try and sand it smooth once it is all in but I believe I will have to get some veneer if I want a stain-able surface. I am sure there is 1/4" plywood out there with a nice surface, but I couldn't find any locally and I did not want to deal with wetting and warming the wood to bend it. The Gaucho Bench is now in. There will be 2 drawers in the middle for storage. I have the sliding top planned but I will wait to put it in after I get my skins on and the new water filler installed. I am pretty sure that I am going to need to put a bump on the right side wall for the filler.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yesterday I got the upper cabinet built. Here you can see it in temporary position. I need to add a shelf in the right hand side door. I will be filling all my staple holes and painting it this weekend. If you are wondering, I have been building the cabinetry with pocket screws, glue and staples.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have also started on my electrical wiring. My power center is at the floor left of the fridge. The 12V wiring is run around but not hooked up yet. I still need to install the 110V wiring. Next up, I will be adding all of the cross member framing to the roof and deciding where the roof fan will go.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It has been a long time since I updated Lucy's progress. A lot of work has been done and she is beginning to look like herself. This blog entry covers about 2 months work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
After the floor was completed and fit to the frame, I removed it and put the wheel wells back on. Thankfully I didn't damage them when i removed them. Some primer and black paint and they were good as new. Thanks to all the helpful people on the NSSO Facebook page, I decided to coat the floor with Herculiner. This is a roll on bed liner product. Many people recommended covering all of the wood with it but I decided to only cover the framing and edges. My reasoning for this is that I think the plywood needs to breath. The top will be completely covered with glue and vinyl flooring. Leaving patches of un-coated plywood will allow it to dry out if it gets wet. </div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G1tJ7a7oBfs/Vkp3BTWybHI/AAAAAAAAAY4/r5hYrFzntWg/s640/blogger-image-173461597.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G1tJ7a7oBfs/Vkp3BTWybHI/AAAAAAAAAY4/r5hYrFzntWg/s400/blogger-image-173461597.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Og-O07ctVls/Vkp3G0XGiGI/AAAAAAAAAZo/q_SiMaQLAtM/s640/blogger-image--1312268115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Og-O07ctVls/Vkp3G0XGiGI/AAAAAAAAAZo/q_SiMaQLAtM/s400/blogger-image--1312268115.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I added a new wire harness and then bolted the floor down. I have also removed the wheels and re-packed the bearings. This was necessary because one of the hubs did not spin easily. However, once the job was finished, the other hub does not spin well. I have not repacked that bearing again yet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We attached the outer walls on both sides, paying close attention to put them back where they go. All of the openings were cut small so that I can adjust them to the aluminum skin when I put it back on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
To give Lucy some extra strength, I am laminating a second layer of plywood on the inside. This will make her 1" smaller inside but I believe it is worth it. I staggered the joints and used two different layers of 1/2" plywood. I have used Heavy Duty Liquid Nails between the layers along with countersunk stainless steel screws on the outside. These walls are sturdy now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Once the glue dried, I used my router and a follow bit and trimmed the interior panels to size. The exterior is a OSB grade and the interior is a Birch paint/stain-able grade.</div>

The cabinetry is coming along too. We found a refrigerator that replaces the old icebox perfectly. We are not going to put a stove back in because I can't imagine cooking in a 70 sq ft camper. This gave us some extra room for a bigger fridge. On the opposite side the cabinet went floor to ceiling before. We shortened it to make the camper feel bigger on the inside.</div>

Swim practice and soccer started so we are running kids around a lot more. This being said, we have made some good progress. I took the frame over to my uncle's house to get a hitch receiver welded on. While I was there, he reinforced every weld on the frame. Lucy is stronger than ever.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ug6jB1Lg8rA/VjDu1rukChI/AAAAAAAAAXo/9CH6EmdEBuo/s1600/IMG_3580.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ug6jB1Lg8rA/VjDu1rukChI/AAAAAAAAAXo/9CH6EmdEBuo/s320/IMG_3580.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I got the frame back home I prepped the frame for painting. I used the Por15 system. It took most of the day to complete. The degreasing went quickly but the metal etching took a while and was difficult to wash all the way off. I had to use a rag to wipe off residue before I could paint. Por15 is awesome stuff. It paints on super easy and leaves a smooth finish. One downside is that if it is not removed right away, it sticks to skin for a while. It took me over a week to wash off everything I got on myself.<br />

You may have noticed the red rims in the picture above. I ended up getting my neighbors son to clean them up and paint them. He did an awesome job and he only had them for 26 hours. The tires were removed, they were stripped, primed, painted and top coated. After I got them back I had new tires put on them. They look awesome now.</div>

Once I got her back in the garage, it was time to start on the floor. I took a lot of measurements off of Lucy before I took her apart. This is a very important step if you are doing a rebuild. If you have the space, you should keep all of the parts you remove. Unfortunately I don't have the space. Anyway, I am putting her back about the same as before. I am adding a slightly different framing structure below the plywood. I am using pine 2x4's for support that I rip to the correct thickness. The floor is simple 1/2" sanded plywood. I will add some kind of coating to the underside next. I was all set to use bed liner material, but now I am not so sure. More research to be done.</div>

It is a little sad to have to take all of her original wood out but there was so little left that was any good, I decided to just start over completely. It is also a little hard to call her Lucy since all of her personality is now at the dump.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WNEGGmgZvhw/Vf_s-kcc50I/AAAAAAAAAWM/s4egsOgq0h4/s1600/IMG_3531.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WNEGGmgZvhw/Vf_s-kcc50I/AAAAAAAAAWM/s4egsOgq0h4/s320/IMG_3531.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /><span id="goog_1357901722"></span>
<div>
Before tearing the sides down, I hung up new plywood and traced the old wall. I am using 1/2" OSB for the outer layer of the camper wall. Luckily I had some help hanging the boards.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LtVq_Uus5EA/Vf_tQGigxiI/AAAAAAAAAWY/-O7niAvgWOU/s1600/IMG_7709.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LtVq_Uus5EA/Vf_tQGigxiI/AAAAAAAAAWY/-O7niAvgWOU/s320/IMG_7709.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ua8-XQF8JEg/Vf_tQGe53OI/AAAAAAAAAWU/A9cbRkcnMgM/s1600/IMG_7711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ua8-XQF8JEg/Vf_tQGe53OI/AAAAAAAAAWU/A9cbRkcnMgM/s320/IMG_7711.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After that, it was a simple matter of removing the rest of the wooden structure. Once it was all down, I used a wire wheel on a grinder to remove all the paint and rust from the frame. Make sure to wear safety glasses and a mask if you do this. Grinding on the frame puts off a lot of dust. Tomorrow I am taking the trailer frame to my uncle's house. We are going to strengthen the frame in a few spots, fix a few cracked welds and add a hitch receiver to the back so we will be able to mount a bike rack.</div>

The skin is in really good shape with just a few dents and only one hole. Jill helped a bunch removing the corner trim.<br />

With the sides off you can see all of the damage. The curbside front has disentegrated from all the water damage. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The roof came off fairly easily. Just had to remove the froward overhead storage and bang on the beams to loosen them from the walls. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The next step is to remove the rest of the roof and then get the street side wall off so it can be used as a template. </div>

I got the upper kitchen cabinet out fairly easily. The old paneling came apart pretty easily with a little coaxing from my hammer. I also took out the street side dinette seat framing. Once that was done, I peeled up some of the old vinyl flooring. This stuff is peeled at the edges but stuck down pretty good in the middle. I planned on taking up all of the floor but using a putty knife is pretty hard work so I only took up a little. I am thinking about getting a multi tool to take up the rest. Anyway after a little flooring was out I decided to see why the ceiling was sagging over the dinette. It was very soft and I knew there was bad wood above it. I used a putty knife and simply cut into the white vinyl ceiling at the front cabinets. Once I completed the cut the ceiling fell in.<br />

Pretty messy huh? This took a while to clean up. After lunch I started removing the exterior aluminum edge trim. I've seen videos online showing how easy it is to do this and every time the trim is screwed in. Of course this little lady was put together with nails. These were a pain to remove. I had to use a small flat head and a hammer to get under the nail heads to pry them loose. Then I used a small nail remover pry bar to pull them out. This process was pretty time consuming. Once all the nails were out I used my putty knife under the trim to pry it loose. The aluminum is soft and you have to make sure to remove it gently because it will bend out of shape pretty easily. Here is a picture with the trim removed. I had expected to see that the roof skins would be bent over the wall skins to help prevent water leaks. This was not the case. The skins simply butted up against each other. The edge trim and putty is the only thing that keeps the water out. I plan on improving that when I put her back together.</div>

Once that was done, I had to remove all of the trim on the bottom edge of the camper. Here is a PRO TIP for anyone removing the skins. Drill a small hole at every joint to make it easier to match the aluminum panels back up. I have to credit <a href="https://youtu.be/U6YouK-PgmA?t=2m55s" target="_blank">Jennies Garage</a> with this idea.</div>

The skin is held in place with many staples however, most were loose because the wood underneath was rotten. The ones that were not loose were rusted and I had to use a screwdriver to pry them loose. I built a wood frame so that I could mount the aluminum pieces and store them vertically in my small garage space.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a very good day and I made a lot of progress taking Lucy apart. One thing I wanted to note here is how she was originally constructed. All of the videos I have seen on youtube about camper framing has showed some form of stick framing with a thin plywood interior wall. The Scotty is not built that way. Her side walls are simply 1/2" plywood. There was a super thin layer of fiberglass insulation between the skin and the wood too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Replacement should be straight forward. I plan to use a sawzall to cut all the staples between the roof framing and the wall so I can pull it out in one piece. This way I can trace the old wall onto new plywood. When I rebuild the wall, I am going to make it stronger. I plan to laminate 2 layers of 1/2" plywood to make a 1" thick wall. This will provide a lot more strength and not too much extra weight. At the bottom where it connects to the base it will still be 1/2" so that the camper does not get any wider.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cheers!</div>

<br /></div>
I started taking Lucy apart today. All of the street side protrusions have been removed. The leftover tape came off pretty easily. I used a metal putty knife. I wish I had a plastic one though and will be purchasing one tomorrow. There is still a bit of residue that I will remove once the skins are off.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also took all of the interior cabinetry dimensions and put them in a CAD program. This allows me to remember all the dimensions and it allows Jill and I to play with the design. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnAFtWq4apsa9bXBgq64BwOU8sPOQAavcDrmh3U9q6GkPBSqGgU-0-CmDF4zm36a985sX1Op1ldFBSX1HkxdBU_AsE17WQHIyAKn_Z_mHvRbSHNoboicepQE8J7Z_3CDJR-t70pvrhMtE/s1600/floorplan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="203" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnAFtWq4apsa9bXBgq64BwOU8sPOQAavcDrmh3U9q6GkPBSqGgU-0-CmDF4zm36a985sX1Op1ldFBSX1HkxdBU_AsE17WQHIyAKn_Z_mHvRbSHNoboicepQE8J7Z_3CDJR-t70pvrhMtE/s320/floorplan.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
Once that was complete I took out the windows on the curb and street side. This was surprisingly easy. This is also where I start to see the extent of the water damage. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Apparently plywood turns to powder when exposed to enough water and time. These pics are of the curb side dinette window. The wood is just gone above it. The street side windows show some damage from window leaks but it is not too bad. </div>

To finish up the day I removed the kitchen base cabinet. This was a lot of fun as I got to use my hammer to tear it apart. Tomorrow I attack the damaged ceiling.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">We moved Lucy into the garage last night. It was a bit nerve racking. I had to put her close to the wall so I can park another car in there when it is not a mess but also keep it from hitting the side of the garage as I backed in. After 2 tries we finally got her in the right spot. One nice thing about restoring a small camper is that it fits in a 2 car garage with room to spare in the back. </span></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This morning I got to<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> work removing the AC unit from Lucy. I found the model online and it looks like it is a 1983 Coleman air conditioner and heater. The original documentation said it weighed 133 lbs. Way too much weight to be put on the roof of the Scotty. Anyway, the interior components came off pretty quickly. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">The plastic shroud came off the top pretty easy too. That old plastic was pretty brittle. I like the look of it on the ground much better than on top of Lucy :).</span></div>

She was very dirty because the camper had been parked under pine trees for quite a while. She also smelled pretty bad. Thankfully it was just a musty, mildewey smell and not an animal smell. She wasn't too pretty in the inside either.<br />

Here is the front end dinette. I added the wood support before pulling her home in case the front wanted to cave in. I had read a horror story about that happening the night before. You can see water damage by the door.<br />

Here is the back bed. The camper came packed with all kinds of extras. Coffee m<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ugs, about 30 spoons, 15 plates, pots, blankets, moldy cushions and of course some TP. </span></div>

Lucy is feeling lighter and cleaner now. Emily and I washed her and got rid of all the junk inside. We've swept every corner and have gotten rid of every bug. </div>

We are now ready for the next step. The AC unit on top is not original. Someone added it and it has broken Lucy's back. The ceiling was never meant to support the weight of much more than a Dove. We will be removing the AC and putting a temporary patch on the roof. Then I will start to assess the severity of the water damage. It is really bad by the door but not sure how bad in the rear yet. </div>

We met some friends at the Hocking Hills State Park campground. They had a 27' camper, we had a tent. Needless to say, we had a blast. It really is nice when your phone has no service. <br />
<br />
On our second day, a tiny little camper pulled in. The camper was maybe 10'. It looked out of place with all the large campers with pop outs. It was old and very rounded and 3 full sized human beings and a dog camped in it. <br />
<br />
On the drive home, while my son talked about the massive 5th wheeler with a back deck, Jill looked online to find information about this small camper. We loved what she found. For the next few days we dove into the world of "canned hams" and vintage campers.<br />
<br />
Well, I am a decent carpenter who loves to build, so I have been searching the internet for a vintage camper for weeks. Late last week, I found one on craigslist. She was small and dirty with a messed up roof and water damage, but she was cheap. On Wednesday, I drove to Newark, OH to take a look at her. For me it was love at first site. Through her dirt and grime, I could see potential. The seller was a great guy, helping me hook up towing lights and taping down loose ends for the drive home. She probably had not moved in 5 years, but the camper pulled easy and quietly as I drove away.<br />
<br />
I stuck to the back roads which is hard to do coming back to Dayton when you have to go across Columbus. I couldn't move too fast because the A/C Unit on top has caved in the roof and it wobbled a lot over 55 mph. Anyway, after a 6 hour round trip journey, I parked her in the back yard.<br />
